THE LEADERS OF GOD AND THE LEADERS OF MEN_25/06/2016
May the Sabbath day be the blessing to the holy multitude. Today's sermon is entitled," The leaders of God and the leaders of men.
Exodus 3:7-9:
"The Lord said: I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out becase of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.
And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go, I am sending you to Pharoah to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt."
When you are being sent, it is important to know who is sending you, to where you are being sent and what you are sent to do. In these verses it is clear that Moses is being sent by God to deliver His people from Egyptian slavery.
Moses became the leader of the Israelites for many years and became old whilst still being the leader of these people. When he was about to die God told him that it was Joshua who would succeed him as the leader of this nation. In Dutoronomy 31:7-8 it says:
"Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel," Be strong and courageous, for you must go with the people into the land that the Lord swore to their forefathers to give them, ad you must devide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you, he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged."
Indeed Joshua led the Israelites because of the blessing bestowed to him by Jehovah through Moses. In Dutoronomi 34:9 it is said: "Now Joshua, son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses."
However, Joshua died before he told the Israelites who would succeed him after his death. But becaouse the Israelites were the God-fearing people, they did not then elect any leader on their own; they asked God to give them the leader chosen by Him.
In Judges 1:1-2 it says: "After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord," who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the Canaanites." The Lord answered, " Judah is to go; I have given the land into his hands."
This behavior of the Israelites displays true faith. There is nothing more important then for the believer not to take decision without consulting God. Even when you are looking for the leader, you ask God to give you the leader chosen by Him. Because the Israelites were truthful believers, whatever they did they frst asked for the lead from God. If you do something through God's authority, it does not fall easily, it will not have unsolved problems.
There is a great message which was passed by Moses to the Israelites found in Dutoronomi 27:9-10 which says:
"...YOU HAVE NOW BECOME THE PEOPLE OF THE LORD YOUR GOD, OBEY THE LORD YOUR GOD AND FOLLOW HIS COMMANDS AND DECREES THAT I GAVE YOU TODAY."
Our faith as amaNazaretha is that of the Israelites, we have become the people of God, we should therefore obey the Lord our God and follow His commands and decrees God gave us through Shembe. In everything Shembe did he did not deviate from the Scripture.
Like Moses Shembe was the Prophet chosen by God to lead amaNazaretha to the right path of God and to teach them to live the holy life. He did this till his death. Like Moses Shembe announced the people who would lead the church after him, this he did being sent by Jehovah.
In 1919 the Prophet took his two sons to mount Inhlangakazi, Galilee and Amos, together with two members of the church, Mnqayi and Mzobe.
Like Moses announcing to the Israelites that Joshua would succeed him for leadership, on this mountain Shembe anointed the four as priests of iBandla lamaNazaretha and thereafter announced that they are the future leaders of this church. He further explained how they would follow each other in leadership.
Great words of the Prophet are these," My children I am sent by Jehovah, Jehovah says that I must anoint these priests for Him. They are the ones who will lead this church when the time comes for the Lord to take me." Like Moses, in everything he did he followed the word of God.
After having been anointed, Shembe sent the two priests to go to preach the Word of God. In their evangelism they were full of the holy Spirit and preached, healed and perform miracles in the name of the Lord and converted many people. But in the cause of all that, the Devil was also with them.
I do not know what entered their heads, but after they had converted many pople, they both decided not to return with them to Ekuphakameni; they then formed their separate churches. Maybe to be told that they were the future leaders of this church made them feel that the continue living of the Prophet was delaying their work. We are just thinking, for we are not told that there was ever any misunderstanding between them and the Prophet.
After the passing on of the Prophet in 1935, his lawyer produced an unsigned Will which he said was written by the Prophet. He gave reasons why this Will was not signed. However some of the provisions of the Will were in conflict with what was said by the Prophet in 1919, for they gave authority to the Executive and Advisory Committee and the leader to recommend the successsor in leadership, whereas the Prophet had already nominated the leaders who would succeed him.
Beause this Will was unsigned by the Testator, it was declared invalid; however, its provisions remained as they were, and the family asked the eldest son of the Prophet Stanela, who was the heir, to give effect to the wishes of the Prophet by converting this Will into an Agreement, and in doing this the Agreement was called Protocol 291. According to Protocol 291the church would be led by 8 Trustees with Lord Galilee Shembe being the Titular head of the church, followed by Lord Amose Shembe and 6 priests.
After the death of the Prophet the church faced leadership squable and as such Protocol 291 was amended and made Lord Galelee Shembe to be the sole Trustee and Head of the church. Protocol 293 provides that the Executive and Advisory Comittee made of 5 priests and 5 ordinary members elect the leader from the priests.
These provisions further provide that if the leader had recommended a successor, that successor recommended by the leader will be the preferred candidate as the successor in leadership. Protocol 293 is not explicit as to whether the succsor appointed by the leader will be a priest or not.
As we have earlier pointed out, there is a conflict between what was said by the Prophet in 1919 and Protocol 293. The Prophet had clearly said that after Lord Galilee Shembe the successor would be Lord Amose Shembe, but Protocol 293 gives powers to the Executive and Advisory Comittee to elect or recommend the successor.
The problem was how the Comittee or Lord Galilee would recommend the successor when the Prophet, being sent by Jehovah, had already named Lord Amose to succeed him. As God-fearing person, Lord Galilee easily solved this problem, but it was then revived by the worldly people to give effect to their known desires.
Lord Galilee never mentioned Protocol 293, but now and again he would remind amaNazaretha about his annointment at mount iNhlangakazi with his younger brother, Amose in 1919.
About 1976, whilrst on mount iNhlangakazi, he repeated the same words when he said, "Mazaretha, my father promised you about me, he said that there would be a beautiful thing which would happen after him. But I am not promising anythig about my children; all I know is that we were two when we were annointed, I was with Amose."
These words pronounced by Lord Galilee Shembe are very important, because they are the ones which abolish provisions relating to any appointment by either the Executive Comittee or recommendations by the leader, because they revive the specific appointment of Lord Amose by the Prophet in 1919.
Indeed, at the death of Lord Galilee, it was discovered that he died without having appointed members of the Executive and Advisory Comittee to elect the successor, nor had he himself recommended anyone to succeed him.
The absence of the Executive and Advisory Comittee and the absence of any person recommended by Lord Galilee to be the successsor meant that any provisions relating to the appointment or recommendation of the successor in leadership of the church were, by the operation of the law, abolished.
This situation, which brought confusion to many people, was such that up to the time of the funeral service of Lord Galilee Shembe, it was not known who would be the successor in leadership of this church.
On the funeral day it was announced that Lord Amose Shembe was going to be an acting successor of the late Galilee Shembe leadership till the leadership problem is solved. When it was announced that Lord Amose was chosen as the leader he was overwhelmingly accepted by amaNazaretha.
Why was Amose chosen as the acting successor in leadership? Firstly, of the leaders annointed by the Prophet in 1919, Lord Amose was the only survivor. Secondly, of the Trustees appointed by the Prphet in 1935 he was again the only survivor and the last priest annointed by the Prophet. Therefore, apart from the fact that he was named the leader of this church by the Prophet, he was the oldest priest in the chuch.
Other sons of Lord Galilee aver that Lord Amose was acting for them; it is not known on what basis they come with this averment. Firstly, it was Lord Galilee who told thusands of amaNazaretha that he was not promising any leadership from his children. Secondly, according to Protocol 293 the Executive and Advisory Comittee can elect only the priest to be the leader of the church. None of Lord Galilee were priests.
Thirdly, though Procol 293 is not specific as to whether the leader may recommend any person other than the priest to be the successor, but nowhere does it say the leader will recomend his sons to be the leaders. There was no son of Lord Galilee who was the priest. Therefore if they say Lord Amose was acting for them, it is not known which provisions of Protocol 293, empowers solely them to be the leaders of this church.
If there was ever any announcement from anyone to that effect, he would just talking his mind, but no lawyer can say something of that nature not basing it on any provision of the law.
By not revivig the Executive and Advisory Comittee and not recommending anyone to succeed him, Lord Galilee was, by action, not deviating from what he had already told amaNazaretha, that he still supports the leadership as named by the Prophet in 1919.
In 2 Kings 14-15 it is said:
" Then he took the cloak that had fallen from him and struck the water with it." Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?" he asked. When he struck the water, it devided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over.
The company of the sons of the prophets from Jericho, who were watching, and said," The Spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha." And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him."
Elisha was nothing, but a boy who used to accompany Prophet Elijah wherever he went. But when the sons of the prophets saw that the Spirit of Elijah descended upon him, they went to meet him and bowed before him, for they knew that being a prophet is a divine leadership which ought to be respected by any God-fearing person. It s not a house or family fief.
On the other hand, whilst Lord Amose Shembe had been annointed and ordained by the Prophet, being sent by Jehovah, and having been overwhelmingly accepted by church members, at eKuphakameni some of the sons of Lord Galilee stood against the leadership of God's church which they regarded as their house fief, and objeced to the leadership of their uncle on the pretext that they were protecting their father's name.
They collected small boys to rally against the church, without any grown up member, with no preachers or priest to support what they were doing. This rally against the church resulted in the death of about four people being killed by them at eKuphakameni Mission.
As it was explained to us by them last week, the eKuphakameni faction was formed by a group of young boys the ring-leader being the very son of Lord Galilee, who was not even the heir of Lord Galilee. They had meetings at night ploting to overthrow the leadership of this church on the ground that the church is their house fief, she cannot be led by their uncle.
It is however not clear where this son got the authority to claim leadership of the church, for he wa not even the heir of Lord Galilee Shembe. It is clear that he was possessed by a certain spirit, as himself has pointed out below. He engaged in the coup' de tet of the church.
( By Londa Shembe, the leader of this faction which was engaged in the plot against the church and which is presently residing at eKuphakameni:
" There were boys who com
plained as to how, at the death of Lord Galilee, could it be his brother who takes the leadership of this church? We DISCUSSED THIS MATTER AT NIGHT, for here in this Mission such talk was not allowed.
But there was one matter that concerned us, it was the matter of our father the Lord. We thought that his name should not cease here at eKuphakameni. But we were fools in thinking that other people were ALSO POSSESSED BY THIS SPIRIT; thinking that when we say the name of my father should not cease, they would support us.")
Because of this instability in the church caused by this son of Lord Galilee, Rev. Mtshali was legaly forced to make an application to the High Court, as the provisions of Protocol 293 requires, and move a motion of appointig the leader in terms of the provisions of that Protocol. But to succeed in that motion was impossible, for there existed neither Executive and Advisory Committee appointed by Lord Galilee, nor was any name recommended by Lord Galilee to lead the church.
What is strange about this argument by the son of Lord Galilee is that from the begining the Prophet named people who were not of Shembe surname to be the leaders of this church; further the provisions of Protocol 293 require that it should only be the priests who are elected to lead the church, and no son of Lord Galilee was a priest.
The whole saga about each and everyone fighting to be Shembe was prophesied by Lord Galilee Shembe before he left this world. In another sermon he said:
"When we Shembes disppear to other side of that mountain, there will appear many Shembes. Each will say,"I am Shembe" and people will follow him; another will also come and say," I am Shembe" and the people will follow him; the monkey will also come and say," I am Shembe" and the people will follow it..
But I warn you, you must eat Shembe, do not smear him, for if you smear him he will quickly move away from you. I say, seek for Shembe who is the Spirit, for the Shembe in flesh ceases, he pass away, but Shembe who is the Spirit does not pass.
The night is approaching, there will be darkness, there are many who will be in darkness. God will bring "inkokhelo" here at eKuphakameni; there will be "inkokhelo" of a man. The "inkokhelo" of maMthembu was better, for it was "inkokhelo" through a woman, this time God will bring "inkokhelo" through a man who will be wearing a trouser like me, he will appear from the sleeve of my gown."
( "Inkokhelo" is the name given to an incident which occurred after the passing away of the Prophet in 1935 where a woman maMthembu, emerged, who claimed to be possessed by the spirit of the Prophet and caused havoc in the church.)
May the Lord bless His words.
